Volunteer/work experience

main content

Due to the volume of projects we run and the number of individuals involved in each project, we always require volunteers to assist in the running of projects.

Maybe you have a couple of days per week to spare, or perhaps you would prefer to help out for an hour every fortnight? This may involve anything from ad hoc administrative or fundraising work in our offices, to organising regular football matches. Whatever time you can spare, we will try and find a volunteer role that would suit your skillset.

For each voluntary position, you will normally be allocated several duties. Every duty assigned to you will be for a specific reason, we would not ask you to do something that the core staff team would not take on themselves. We will support you at every opportunity to ensure that both you and the group you are working work, if appropriate, gain from the experience and continue to grow with YourStory.

How it works

The process starts with an informal chat with one of the directors:

  • Firstly we explain what we do
  • Secondly we will find out what your background is and what experience you have
  • Thirdly we find out what you see yourself doing and what elements you would like to focus most on
  • Next we would look at how much time you have and when you are available
  • Then we would start you up, get you to observe a couple of sessions, asses the situation and then move forward.

Whatever your background or experience there is always an opportunity for you to gain valuable experience helping people in a fun, safe environment with an organisation that is growing everyday and that has your welfare at heart.

Should you be interested in finding out more about volunteering or work experience at YourStory please either send an email using our feedback form or telephone us on 020 7501 8362 and we will be happy to provide further information.

Please note that our rigorous selection process for both permanent staff and volunteers is in place for the protection of children and vulnerable people from abuse. Prior to doing any work with young people under 16, you will be required to go through a Criminal Records Bureau check.

What YourStory did for me

By giving me the opportunity to coach sport to children, YourStory made me realise how much more rewarding and more difficult coaching kids is compared to what I imagined and it has made me more determined to become a coach in the future.

I originally joined YourStory for three weeks work placement from the Prince's Trust Personal Development Course. However, after my experience with YourStory I now wish to return to YourStory to gain further experience as a volunteer and hopefully gain my Level 1 Football Coaching Badge.

I would also like to thank YourStory for giving me the chance to have worked with them in coaching sport. Thank you for your support Adrian, Andy, Darren and Ken.
