Objectives of mentoring

  • 1.1 To assist Southwark PPO scheme in reducing crime and disorder in Southwark by providing an advocacy service to offenders in the community or to those who intend to reside in the borough after discharge from prison.
  • 1.2 To assist offenders’ compliance with the conditions of a community order or licence, and participation in the programme of supervision. To support offenders in their attendance at enforceable appointments as part of an order or licence.
  • 1.3 To promote a change of attitude in offenders by advocacy using behavioural and motivational techniques and interaction. To enhance development of self-confidence, self-esteem, increased motivation, broadening of horizons and experience, and the creation of new relationships outside the offending circle. To encourage becoming involved in activities other than crime that will enhance offenders’ self-worth. To help in making significant transitions in knowledge, work or thinking. To offer a vehicle for analysis, reflection and action.
  • 1.4 To provide a ‘sounding-board’ for offenders’ personal problems so that they can be brought out into the open. To offer friendship, raise achievements and aspirations. To provide a tangible link with the possibility of a better life.
  • 1.5 To explore the reasons for offending behaviour and work towards eliminating those reasons. To identify problems (both personal and social) that have directly contributed to offending and may be common to the service user group. To confront negative behaviour and encourage positive enhancement of lifestyles.
  • 1.6 To facilitate exploration of needs, motivations, desires and thought processes to assist in identifying options and achieving real and lasting change.
  • 1.7 To assist in the development of frameworks for personal development using realistic long-term goals and short-term objectives. To encourage the pursuit of own solutions, commitment to action and development of lasting growth and change.
  • 1.8 To facilitate offenders’ use of other agencies’ community-based services. To signpost resources and provide appropriate information and practical support when needed. To link offenders with local services that they might otherwise have difficulty in accessing.
  • 1.9 To encourage offenders to take responsibility for their own rehabilitation and not to become reliant on the assistance of the advocate.
  • 1.10 To enable the offender to achieve success and fulfilment in one or more areas of their work or life, and to fill their time constructively.
  • 1.11 To provide one-to-one support in the home and community.
  • 1.12 To work towards goals created in an individualised service plan, devised from a needs assessment compiled with the offender.
  • 1.13 To work in partnership with other family members and natural supports who provide help and assistance to the offender.
  • 1.14 To enhance self-efficacy by focusing on the strengths of the offender.
  • 1.15 To link the offender into the community via further education, training or employment opportunities.
  • 1.16 To link the offender into other resources within the community (for example sport and leisure pursuits, drug and alcohol support, benefits agencies). These links will remain in place when contact with the advocate ceases.

We at Southwark’s ‘Prolific and Other Priority Offenders Team’ (PPO) have been working with ‘Your Story’ since April 2006. During this time they have worked with approximately 12 clients on the Southwark PPO Scheme. All our clients by the nature of the scheme are challenging individuals for any number of reasons.

Although we have only been working together for a short period of time I feel we have forged a good working relationship. ‘Your Story’ are at the end of the telephone and respond very quickly to any new referrals or other issues that need addressing.

Our feedback from our PPO clients is very positive and as a result we try to get as many PPO clients as possible to work with ‘Your Story’. The retention rate by ‘Your Story’ is very good and they are also in most cases in a position to understand their individual predicaments because of their own life experiences.

We are currently very pleased to be working with ‘Your Story’ We as a multi agency team have certainly benefited in having ‘Your Story’ working along side us with our clients.
