Sports Leaders Award
The aim of the Community Sports Leaders Award and Sports Leaders Award is to produce responsible, motivated and confident people who can lead safe, purposeful and enjoyable sporting and recreational activities.
The award provides a common foundation for the coaching schemes of the national governing bodies of sport. As such it concentrates on improving the leadership skills required to plan, prepare and deliver a sports session and evaluate the activity.
The Community Sports Leaders UK Level One Award in Sports Leadership is divided into eight units of work. Candidates must complete all eight units to the satisfaction of the tutor/assessor in order to qualify for the award.
YourStory has delivered both awards over the last two years, with over 100 people trained and qualified. We have also acted as consultant to a number of big organisations, training their tutors to deliver the course in the most positive and productive manner.
The beauty of this course is that all of the skills learnt are transferable into everyday life. By empowering the young person’s self worth they have the confidence to lead their peers by speaking in a loud and clear manner whilst commanding attention using their body language.
Each individual has to complete 10 hours of voluntary work in the community before they qualify. This gives the client the hands-on experience needed to develop and better themselves.
“I have been very impressed on the couple of occasions that I have externally verified the Community Sports Leaders courses that YourStory has delivered in the past year. They have worked with very challenging groups of young adults and have achieved a high rate of success (both with the number of Sports Leaders gaining this National qualification and with the minimal drop out rate of those who started the courses). The YourStory tutors work very well together as a team and provide 'added value' encouragement and support to the candidates throughout the course. (I always ask other staff who work with the groups eg language, literacy and numeracy teachers, what they think about the course and their response is amazement at how much the participants have progressed...especially in terms of organisation, communication, motivational skills and teamwork). The participants’ sense and recognition of their own achievement at the end of the course is the most telling. I ask them what they can do now that they couldn't do at the start of the course and they all say they never thought they would be able to stand up in front of a group and lead the session - which they can now (as well as the new ideas and teamwork skills gained). YourStory works in Lambeth and Southwark. I wish there was a YourStory team working in every Borough in London.”
